Saving your natural tooth is usually the starting point. A filling, crown or root canal treatment has a different role, and sometimes more than one is needed. We’ll examine the tooth, discuss what matters to you and explain the options, likely costs and outlook.
Fillings: repairing a smaller area of damage
A filling replaces tooth structure lost through decay, wear or a small break. It may be suitable when enough healthy tooth remains to support the repair. The material and approach depend on the tooth, the size of the repair and your preferences.
Crowns: supporting a weakened tooth
A crown covers a tooth that needs more protection than a filling can provide, for example after extensive damage or a large existing restoration. It requires preparation of the tooth. We’ll discuss the balance between preserving tooth structure, strength and appearance.
Root canal treatment: treating the inside of a tooth
Root canal treatment addresses inflamed or infected tissue inside a tooth, with the aim of keeping the tooth where it can be restored. The canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed. A filling or crown is then needed to restore and protect the tooth; root canal treatment and a crown can therefore be parts of the same care plan.
When a tooth cannot be saved
Sometimes a tooth is too damaged, cannot be predictably restored, or has an infection that cannot be managed by other treatment. Extraction may then be appropriate. We’ll explain why, discuss any reasonable alternatives and talk through the procedure and aftercare.
Not every gap needs replacing. If replacement is appropriate, we can discuss options and timing as part of your plan.

Choosing the right next step
You don’t need to choose a treatment before booking. An examination, with X-rays where clinically needed, helps us assess the tooth and explain what each option could offer. Your comfort, priorities and budget are part of that conversation.
